Botest Systems Introduces System for Advanced OLED Lifetime Measurements

A German manufacturer has developed a system which combines extended testing capabilities and a flexible concept to provide a comprehensive tool for OLED lifetime monitoring.

Lifetime is one of the key performance parameters of OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diodes). It is commonly defined as the time for luminance to decrease to half of its initial value. In a more general context, lifetime may be defined as the loss of functionality of the device, determined by changes in emission uniformity, operating voltage, temperature, emission color, etc. , depending on product requirements. In order to enable measurements following this more general definition Botest Systems has now developed an OLED lifetime test system that monitors emission color and temperature in addition to the standard parameters luminance, current, and voltage.

Apart from the extended testing capabilities the new system is based on an extremely flexible concept that allows operating every device individually. Specific user defined modes of operation (constant and pulsed) and measurement procedures can be used. For every sample lifetime measurements can be performed in a wide range of specific environmental conditions. Furthermore, the system has an Integrated LIV characteristics mode. This does not only allow for measuring LIV-characteristics of the devices at any time during lifetime monitoring, but also for using the OLT as a tool for standard electro optical characterization of OLEDs, making additional measurement systems redundant.

Dr. Thomas Däubler, Head of Measurement Division of Botest Systems, states: "Our OLED Lifetime Tester (OLT) is designed to measure the most important device characteristics simultaneously. It operates for a wide range of parameters that influence OLED lifetime and is open for customizing. We believe that our solution meets the needs of OLED R&D and OLED manufacturing and that it is a useful tool for advanced lifetime testing in this compelling new technology."

SID 2005, one of the premier annual events of the global OLED industry, will see the worldwide market introduction of the new OLED lifetime test system. (May 22 - 27, 2005, Boston, USA).

Botest Systems GmbH is a technology company founded in 2001. The company is active in the development, manufacturing, and marketing of innovative testing and inspection equipment for various high-tech industries, with a special focus on measurement solutions for organic semiconductors (OSCs), especially organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs).
